GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Astronium lecointei Ducke – Anacardiaceae

REGION: Central and South America.

OTHER NAMES: Muiracatiara-Rajada, Aderno-Preto, Baracatiara, Goncaleiro, Maracatiara, Muiraquatiara and Sanguessugueira.

COLOR: Heartwood pale pinkish brown to yellowish brown, becoming dark red after exposure to sun light and slightly distinct from the lighter sapwood. Shows stripes of dark reddish brown to black.

GRAIN and TEXTURE: Grain wavy or slightly interlocked, texture medium to fine and moderate luster.

ODOR: No distinct odor.

DENSITY: Heavy wood, with density of 930 Kg/m³ at 12% MC and green density of 1,200 Kg/m³.

DRYING: Air-dries very well, without defects. Kiln-dries rapidly, with moderate tendency for pronounced checking.

WORKABILITY: Easy to sand and bore. Very easy to turn and regular to plane. Bad finishing in planning, regular in sanding and excellent in turning and boring. Good to saw, peel into veneer, glue, screw and very good to turn. Previous boring is advisable for nailing. Finishes well and provides a very lustrous surface.

DURABILITY: Very durable. Resistant to insects and dry-wood termites.

PRESERVATION: Heartwood not treatable with creosote and CCA-A, even with pressure-vacuum systems.

USES: Flooring, fine furniture, tools handles, cabinet works, musical instruments, veneers and many other applications.
