GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Couratari spp. – Lecythidaceae

REGION: South America.

OTHER NAMES: .

COLOR: Indistinct heartwood and sapwood yellowish white to light yellowish brown.

GRAIN and TEXTURE: Slightly distinct growth rings, grain straight, texture medium and moderate luster.

ODOR: Slight Odor.

DENSITY: Light to medium density wood, with density of 680 Kg/m³at 12% MC and green density of 1,100 Kg/m³.

DRYING: Kiln-dries very rapidly and usually without major defects, with a slight tendency to moderate checking and twisting.

WORKABILITY: Easy to work, providing smooth surface and good finishing when planed, turned or bored.

DURABILITY: Resistant to dry-wood termites but vulnerable to blue stain fungi. Therefore, is advisable to use it Kiln-Dried and protected from humidity and insects.

PRESERVATION: Very easy to preserved with creosote and CCA-A when treated with pressure-vacuum systems.

USES: Civil and naval construction (beams, shingles and shakes, panels, window shutters, doorposts, window sashes, baseboards and framing), furniture, musical instruments, toys, cabinet work, sliced veneers, plywood, boxes and crates and many other applications.
