GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Peltogyne spp. – Leguminosae Caesalpinioideae

REGION: South America.

OTHER NAMES: Roxinho, Pau-Roxo, Pau-Roxo-da-Terra Firme, Amarante, Coraci, Coataquicaua, Escorrega-Macaco, Guarabu, Pau-Mulato, Roxinho-Pororoca and Violeta.

COLOR: Heartwood dark brown when freshly cut becoming deep purple to purplish violet, clearly distinct from narrow light yellow to very pale brown sapwood.

GRAIN and TEXTURE: Grain straight, wavy or interlocked, texture medium to fine, luster moderate to high.

ODOR: No distinctive odor.

DENSITY: Heavy wood, with density of 1,000 Kg/m³ at 12% MC and green density of 1,300 Kg/m³.

DRYING: Kiln-dries rapidly, with slight tendency to pronounced end checking, twisting and springing.

WORKABILITY: Regular in plane and excellent in sanding, turning and boring. Reported as moderately difficult to work due to its hardness and resin exudation when heated by tools.

DURABILITY: Heartwood highly resistant to decay, fungi and very resistant to dry-wood termite. Not resistant to marine borers.

PRESERVATION: Heartwood not treatable with creosote or CCA-A, even with pressure-vacuum systems.

USES: Fine cabinet work, Interior and exterior construction (beams, shakes, panels, window shutters, doorposts, window sashes, baseboards and framing), railroads crossties (sleepers), flooring, musical instruments, tool handles, turnery and many other applications.
