GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Hymenaea courbaril L. – Leguminosae Caesalpinioideae

REGION: South America.

OTHER NAMES: Copal, Courbaril, Jatai, Jutai, Jutai-Acu, Jutai-Grande, quebra-Machado.

COLOR: Heartwood reddish brown with dark streaks, becoming dark brownish red, sharply demarcated from the pale brown sapwood.

GRAIN and TEXTURE: Grain interlocked, texture medium to fine and moderate luster.

ODOR: No distinctive odor.

DENSITY: Heavy wood, with density of 900 Kg/m³ at 12% MC and green density of 1,240 Kg/m³.

DRYING: Air and kiln-dries easily and rapidly, without serious problems of checking and warping.

WORKABILITY: Difficult to plane, medium to sand, good to bore and very good to turn. Good gluing, finishing and steam-bending properties. May possibly present mechanical problems when veneering and peeling due to crystals. Finishes well with paint and varnish. Polishes well.

DURABILITY: Heartwood very resistant to fungi and termites. Sapwood easily attacked. Low resistance to marine borers.

PRESERVATION: Heartwood not treatable with creosote and CCA-A, even with pressure-vacuum systems.

USES: Interior and exterior construction (beams, shingles and shakes, panels, window shutters, doorposts, window sashes, baseboards and framing), railroads crossties (sleepers), flooring, sliced veneer, tool handles, turnery and many other applications.
