GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Copaifera spp. – Leguminosae Caesalpinoideae

REGION: Central and South America.

OTHER NAMES: Copaiba-Preta, Copaiba-Vermelha, Copaibeira (MT – Brazil), Oleo-de-Copaiba, Oleo-Pardo and Pau-D’oleo.

COLOR: Heartwood reddish brown with dark stripes, distinct from the grayish sapwood.

GRAIN and TEXTURE: Slightly distinct growth rings, grain straight or slightly interlocked and medium texture.

ODOR: Fresh wood has characteristic odor, which disappears after drying.

DENSITY: Medium density wood, with density of 750 Kg/m³ at 12% MC and green density of 1,100 Kg/m³.

DRYING: Air-dries at moderate slow rate, with no serious defects. Kiln drying is fast, with moderate checking, cupping and twisting.

WORKABILITY: It can be easily worked with hand and machine tools, generating a smooth and uniform surface. Good nail and screw holding properties. The oil resin exudation during drying process may render gluing problems, depending on the adhesive properties.

DURABILITY: Very durable in resistance to wood-degraders organisms.

PRESERVATION: Sapwood is easily preserved while the heartwood is difficult to be treatable with creosote and CCA-A, even with pressure-vacuum systems.

USES: Interior trim, ceilings, furniture, tool handles, sliced veneers, plywood, packaging, truck flooring and many other applications.
