GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Myroxylon peruiferum – Leguminosae

REGION: Central and South America and Mexico.

OTHER NAMES: Bálsamo del Perú, Cabreuva-Vermelha, Estoraque, Olor and Sandalo.

COLOR: The sapwood is pale brown while the heartwood is purplish-red in color.

GRAIN and TEXTURE: Interlocked grain and medium grade texture. Medium to high luster

ODOR: No distinct odor.

DENSITY: Heavy wood, with density of 950 Kg/m³ at 12% MC and green density of 1,200 Kg/m³.

DRYING: Take some time to dry properly but does have good stability characteristics once dry.

WORKABILITY: Somewhat difficult to cut due to its hardness (2200). This species sands easily and provides a good finish.

DURABILITY: Durable and resists attacks by fungus and insects.

PRESERVATION: Heartwood not treatable with creosote and CCA-A, even with pressure-vacuum systems.

USES: Flooring, furniture, tools handles and veneers.
